Doctor of Pedagogy (PaedDr.) at Apsley Business School, with DTI University

This innovative two and a half year vocational doctorate programme combines the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGDipHE) from Apsley Business School with the award of the PaedDr. degree from DTI University. It is specifically designed for teachers of English/EFL in East Asia who are seeking academic advancement or promotion within universities and teacher training institutions. The programme supports working professionals through a flexible blend of online learning and applied research. In Year 1, students complete the 120 ECTS Masters-Level PGDipHE, which provides advanced pedagogical training and a foundation for higher education leadership. In Year 2, candidates complete a rigorous thesis under DTI University supervision. This recognised doctoral title enhances your academic profile and opens doors to senior posts in teaching and particularly academic management. Accredited pursuant to Section 53, Paragraphs 9 and 10 and Section 63 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education Institutions and on Amendments to Certain Acts, as amended, and in accordance with Article 27 of the DTI Study Regulations, is accepting applications for rigorous continuation in the field of study of teaching and pedagogical sciences in 2020

Whole programme:

The whole MBA is accredited at 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System Credits), which is equivalent to 240 credits at the postgraduate level in the British system. Most students will complete the whole programme in 6 to 18 months. The delivery is either classroom based, blended or online. The content, delivery, and final certification are identical for each mode of study. This joint programme is structured over two phases: Year 1: The PGDipHE at Apsley Business School (120 ECTS / Level 7 and Level 8), focused on practical pedagogy, curriculum design, and higher education delivery. Year 2: The PaedDr. at DTI University, a rigorous doctorate in pedagogy based on thesis defence (delivered with Apsley Business School at a further 120 ECTS at Level 8). Together, the programme offers 240 ECTS and is designed for completion over 18–24 months. It is delivered through a flexible combination of online modules, one2one research supervision, and self-directed study. Certification and final awards are recognised across the European Higher Education Area. Language of Study may be English, Japanese or Korean

Each unit:

The PGDipHE (Year 1) includes five taught modules: Reflective Practice, Curriculum and Instructional Design, Assessment in HE, Technology-Enhanced Learning, and Professional Research Methods. Each module is assessed via written assignments (Max. 3,000 words each) with strong emphasis on classroom application and reflective teaching portfolios. In Year 2, candidates complete an independent research thesis (max. 40,000 words) under DTI University’s academic supervision. The thesis must present original insights into pedagogical practice or English language education. Upon successful defence, the academic title PaedDr. (Doctor of Pedagogy) is conferred

TARGET STUDENTS

This programme is designed for experienced English language educators and EFL lecturers across East Asia who currently hold teaching posts in schools, language centres, or higher education institutions. Ideal candidates are those seeking to advance into university-level teaching roles, pursue promotions, or take on curriculum leadership and teacher training responsibilities. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), and be able to demonstrate current employment in education. For Advanced Entry directly to the Research Phase applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent), and be able to demonstrate current employment in education. This vocational doctorate offers a practical and recognised pathway for teachers who want to gain academic credibility through research-led practice and achieve the prestigious PaedDr. title while continuing to work full-time.
